The Unified Women's Professional MMA Rankings, formerly the WAMMA rankings, are assembled each month by a panel of journalists from multiple MMA websites and publications. These rankings were the first women's mixed martial arts rankings by division and weight class and are considered by most media outlets as the official women's MMA rankings.
The rankings are now posted at:

Some of you have asked which fighters are listed in which weight classes, so I have posted the current fighter list above. The list is in alphabetic order and includes fighters who have fought within the last 18 months. If you see any fighters that you think should be in another weight class or if you know of any fighter that isn't listed, please let me know. Thanks.
(EDIT: As of 5-1-10, a fighter must have fought within the past 12 months to be considered active)

Unfortunately, there just isn't enough fighters out there for a Lightweight division and those that do fight at Lightweight are now fighting at Featherweight where there's bigger fights. |

I don't think that Julia Berezikova really belongs in any Top 10 list, and if there are no better candidates for that #10 spot, then she's pretty much there by default due to that division having so few top competitors (most compete one weight class above or below).
For Flyweight, I'd put Elena Reid at #10, though I can understand holding off on that decision until her fight in October. If she wins that, she has to be at least at #9, if not #8. There is a reason why she's regarded as the top prospect - arguably in any weight class - in women's MMA right now. Unless someone can take her down and submit her, they're royally screwed.
The Featherweight/Lightweight situation is so convoluted right now, but what I might suggest is having the Lightweight division as a Top 5 instead of 10. That can be changed later if and when more top fighters begin competing at 145, but everything is messed up because Strikeforce has designated their 145-pound division as Lightweight (normally Featherweight in most promotions, even for women) and 135-pound as (I believe) Featherweight.
However, for the current WAMMA setup, Gina definitely isn't at the top of anything anymore, and should drop to #4 without the slightest hint of argue. I strongly disagree with her ever being #1 in the first place, but I guess Marloes's loss to Cindy and Erin's relative inactivity for years (until 2008) and all-over-the-place weight divisions made that tough.
Cyborg
Erin
Marloes
Gina
After that, remainder looks fine.
Unrelated, Sherdog's maintaining of female fighters' records is so awful. They only have one of Lisa Higo's fights listed, and it's from February of last year. Terrible. |

Hey "Rising" - Thanks for your input. I always like to hear other peoples opinions of the rankings, especially when they back it up with facts.
I think you're right about Berezikova being ranked by "default" and that's somewhat true in other divisions as well, once you get toward the bottom of the lists. The good news is that we're now seeing more females fighting in all divisions and hopefully pretty soon, they'll all be as competitive as the 135-lb class.
Oh, and you're 100% correct.....Fightergirls.com kicks Sherdog's ass when it comes to female fight records! We RULE, that's right!
PS - Tell Coker he needs to get his act together about the naming of the divisions.....Bantamweight is 135 and Featherweight is 145. |

As far as I know, it was actually the California State Athletic Commission (and would that really surprise you??) that made the call on the division naming, as Scott made a comment along the lines of, "Apparently, this is actually the lightweight division for women, so we're going to call it the Lightweight title" at the post-fight press conference.
It didn't appear to be his idea, and I think that he's just going along with what someone or some commission told him. If I get the chance to work on some stuff with them, I'd suggest changing it to Featherweight unless the belt is inscribed or something. I don't think that it is.
In the interest of not taking this thread off-topic, I'm going to make a post about fighter record clarifications in the Top 10 Rankings thread in this forum. |

Well, I'm not exactly sure how the members will vote this month, but I feel fairly certain you've got number 1 correct! |

The new WAMMA Women's Rankings are out for September and as you can see, the Flyweight, Super Flyweight and Bantamweight divisions stayed pretty much the same. The big change comes at Featherweight with "Cyborg" now ruling the division and Gina falling to fourth.
Also, WAMMA, with their new partnership in place, has now started updating the website again, so check it out.....http://www.gowamma.com/ |
